Star Trek: Discovery season 5 premiered a teaser at New York Comic Con in October of last year, which signaled a new storyline for Captain Michael Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery involving a hunt for "the greatest treasure in the known galaxy.

Doug Jones: I think what season 4 set up was big adventures, big problems, and big problem-solving. And big exploration is something that our show does, that our Starship Discovery does. Season 5 is no different. We're faced with something in season 5 that is, again, a head-scratcher. It needs figuring out. It needs jumping around the galaxy to chase clues again. And so, we're going to do that with some success.
Star Trek: Discovery season 5's 'treasure hunt' indicates that Captain Burnham and her ship will be gallivanting around the galaxy and turning over hidden corners. This will include the introduction of new characters like Captain Rayner , and couriers Moll and L'ak , who may know Burnham from her lost year traveling the galaxy with Cleveland Booker .
Jones also verified that Captain Saru's romantic relationship with President T'Rina will continue, and fans should be "very happy" with what transpires. Saru, a Kelpien, raised eyebrows when he became romantically interested in T'Rina, the Vulcan leader of the planet Ni'Var, and she reciprocates his feelings.
