Now what? Many greeters, rightfully so, have expressed anger and disappointment at the announcement. Some outraged families even posted statements of protest on their Facebook pages. In North Carolina, an online petition circulated to help a veteran greeter keep his job. More than 14,000 people signed the petition. But Walmart maintained its position that greeters were being phased out. In other states, the community has planned a parade for the greeters to thank them for their work.
In the 60-day transition period, Walmart greeters have been offered, Mizrahi suggests employees should be looking for work elsewhere in the community. “There is often work at local churches, other fast food outlets and locally owned restaurants and small businesses—there is no one company town anymore,” she said. “Greeters have skills that can translate to other jobs.
