We chat with Alienoid director Choi Donghoon about the 5 years he spent crafting the sci-fi epic set in the Goryeo era, how he casts screen icons like Kim Woobin & Kim Taeri, and what he thinks of the recent Hallyu wave in cinema:

One of Korea’s leading filmmakers, Choi Dong-hoon has become synonymous with critical acclaim and box office success. With his latest film, Alienoid, he grows even more ambitious by blending the mysticism of ancient Taoism with an action-packed and futuristic science fiction story. Premiering on August 26, Alienoid tells the story of time-traveling aliens who imprison their criminals in the bodies of humans, shuttling back and forth between the present and the Goryeo dynasty.

It is a convergence of the Western and Eastern worlds. Of course, the Eastern side, I'm quite familiar with. I wanted to show the world of Korean Tao musicians, and this whole fantastical world. For the Western world, I would say I was inspired by '80s sci-fi films like Terminator, Back to the Future, and Alien—and also Hollywood B-movies from the '50s like Don Siegel's Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

When I'm writing, I have to imagine who could play this role. If I'm imagining one person in particular while writing, and then I suddenly have writer's block? Then I come up with another person, and all of a sudden the story just gushes down—and now that is the person. I start off with the basic plot, and I always write stories driven by the character, so for me the actor is the life of my project. Luckily enough, I was able to have everybody come on board.

I thought that was enough for me to reveal in the film, and so I only built the social system of that alien civilization. I'm going to have to think more about what else can be added to that backstory. I think one of the reasons that happened was that Yu-ri asked me what's most important when performing as an actor, and I said, "Your eyes. Your gaze." I think there was a moment when the gaze of Tae-ri and the gaze of Yu-ri became aligned.

I know Alienoid Part 2 was already filmed, but how early on did you know your story required two movies? How did you decide to split them up?
