As our world rapidly evolves with cutting-edge technologies such as AI, the metaverse and quantum computing, we are witnessing an increased integration of these innovations into our daily lives. However, more than merely introducing these advancements in educational institutions is required.
Being a digital native does not necessarily translate to having a comprehensive grasp of the ethical and social consequences of one's digital behavior. While these young individuals are comfortable using technology and may even excel at it, they may only sometimes recognize or fully appreciate the broader impact of their online actions regarding data privacy, online security and the responsible use of technology.
Moreover, it necessitates a strong awareness of data rights, which are individuals' rights concerning their data, including the right to know how data is collected and used, control of one's data and protections from misuse or unauthorized access. Digital natives may not always be fully aware of these rights or how to exercise them effectively, even though they are most likely to be affected by data-related issues.
Moreover, this journey toward digital awareness paves the way for individuals to embark on data sovereignty. Fostering a culture of digital awareness equips individuals with the vital knowledge and tools necessary to exercise control over their data, enabling them to make informed decisions regarding its collection, usage and sharing.
