Healthy lifestyle changes to reduce systolic blood pressure to below 130 mm Hg may prevent 26,000 heart attacks and strokes and reduce healthcare costs over the next 10 years, a new simulation study suggests.diet, known as the DASH diet, may have the greatest impact for young and middle-aged adults with stage 1 hypertension.
Sims and colleagues used US statistics from multiple sources to simulate CVD events, mortality, and healthcare costs between 2018 and 2027 in adults aged 35-64 years with untreated stage 1 hypertension, defined as systolic BP of 130 to 139 mm Hg. Controlling blood pressure to less than 130 mm Hg in this population could prevent 26,000 CVD events, avoid 2900 deaths, and lead to $1.6 billion in associated healthcare costs, the researchers calculate.
"Unfortunately, the availability and affordability of healthy food sources does not easily allow people to follow the DASH diet," Sims adds in a conference news release.
