After battling for survival in earlier moves, this time a long-term commitment to the Carlisle campus seems to be a given.
That’s because the early messaging from Penn State officials is that the one law school that remains will, in the words of Penn State Dickinson Law Dean Danielle Conway, “have its primary location in Carlisle,” with those last words set out in boldface.
This time, the conversation begins with Carlisle as the focal point. That has people invested in the local campus feeling hopeful. Their recommendations, expected around the end of the current academic year, will lead to a final proposal to be ratified by Penn State’s board of trustees.Bendapudi said Tuesday she believes this is a long-term path for Penn State to have one excellent law school instead of two very good ones competing against each other.
PennLive asked Penn State for application numbers from the two schools Tuesday, including how many students applied to both, but had not received a response at this writing.Supporters of the Carlisle campus say there are several reasons why it may have earned priority status in this equation. While significantly smaller than the other two, Shultz noted that the law school has historically offered good jobs and brought professionals to Carlisle who would never have landed here otherwise, and who have made their mark in a variety of community-lifting ways.
But overall, he said, “the Penn State affiliation has been a wonderful success, and my feeling is that with just one law school we’re only going to have greater success.”
