Diane Keaton stars in the new comedy Book Club: The Next Chapter, with the movie's critical reception keeping her bad Rotten Tomatoes streak alive.
After hitting theaters on May 12, Diane Keaton’s new comedy movie Book Club: The Next Chapter is receiving mixed reviews, thus keeping alive her 20-year streak of critical misfires. Book Club: The Next Chapter's cast is led by screen legends Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen as they travel to Italy and apply the revelations of The Alchemist to their changing lives and romances.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Book Club 2’s disappointing critical response isn’t much different form the original movie, which still holds a mixed 54% Rotten Tomatoes score at the time of writing. In the time since and before the Book Club movies, Diane Keaton’s films have had similar critical responses, which marks a major departure from her Oscar-winning hits of the 1970s like Annie Hall, Reds, and the first two The Godfather movies.
Before this streak began, Diane Keaton’s last movie that was beloved by both critics and audiences was the 2003 Nancy Meyers romcom Something’s Gotta Give, which also starred Jack Nicholson, Keanu Reeves, and Amanda Peet. Looking further back on her career, only 10 of Diane Keaton’s 33 rated movies before 2003 have mixed or negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Consequently, Book Club: The Next Chapter’s mixed reviews strengthen the worst critical bomb streak of her 53-year spanning film career.
Why Diane Keaton's Movies Keep Failing With Critics Since the early 2000s, Diane Keaton has primarily taken on movies that have intriguing basic ideas, but aren't executed particularly well. Keaton herself even has strong performances in many such movies, but the ultimate products continue falling flat with critics.
Many of her films during this period have been smaller comedy movies, which generally benefit from the proven acting talents of Keaton. The actress continues tackling goofier roles in family comedies, including two dysfunctional family-centered Christmas movies, that have messy executions, but she admirably appears to be having a great time making them.
