David and Susan Jeffcock's family said their devotion to each other was absolute.
The family of an elderly couple who died together after a long battle with cancer have spoken of their 'complete devotion' to one another. David Jeffcock, 80, and his wife Susan, 74, were found at the foot of cliffs in Whitby after what relatives believe was a carefully planned final act.
The pair, who had been married for 52 years, had left a letter with their solicitor before making their way to the town’s East Cliff, where they held hands and stepped over the edge. YorkshireLive said David had been battling bone cancer and was said to be in constant pain. His wife, who had cared for him throughout his illness, told family she could not imagine life without him. In the note, David apologised for the shock their deaths might cause but added: “Susan wants to come with me.” Nephew Kevin Shepherd, 66, said his uncle had once been a sociable and cheerful man but the illness had left him withdrawn and struggling, the Daily Mail reports. Kevin, a funeral celebrant from Rotherham, said: “It is extremely sad to think of them in that position, where they both wanted to take their own lives and to go together. Between them they had come to the decision that Susan couldn’t carry on without him. Their devotion was absolute.” The couple, who had no children, met in Sheffield in the 1970s and moved to Whitby in later life. They loved their harbour-side flat with views out to sea. Kevin added: “They felt completely at home there. They loved the people, the atmosphere, everything about Whitby.” An inquest has been opened into their deaths, with the cause recorded as “multi-trauma”. The full hearing will take place next year.
