We chat with SonicPrime star Deven Mack and EP Logan McPherson about developing the Shatterverse on netflix, exploring alternate versions of Amy Rose and Knuckles, and keeping things canon:
Warning: Mild spoilers for Sonic PrimeFans who are starved for a more serious, darker version of Sonic the Hedgehog rather than the one based on the video games may view with skepticism Netflix's upcoming Sonic Prime show from WildBrain's executive producers Erik Wiese and Logan McPherson. It's understandable.
Logan McPherson: Not specifically. I wouldn't say that Black Knight drove those particular ideas, but the show is canon, and it is based on the mythology that exists across the games. To ensure we had done our research on that, we worked very closely with Sega. They have been and are amazing collaborators on the series, and they were all over every detail.
Deven Mack: Honestly, I can't say that there's one in particular because Sonic is such a character that has endured for so many generations, and I have kind of been there for all of them. So I'm just mixing and matching, just taking a bit from here and a bit from there and throwing my own unique spin in there - literally spinning [laughs] - wherever I can. So, yah. It's just something I'm very grateful to be able to contribute to this legacy that has lasted for so long.
It was important for us to balance those elements and respect Amy, her core, her archetype, in terms of her character. But it was also important for us to bring in those elements and make sure she can speak to a range of emotions and live in these action sequences at the same time and really compete with both Sonic and Knuckles on that stage, So it was really important that we leveled her up in that.
Are there any chances we might see other characters from IDW like Whisper [the Wolf]? She's one of my favorite characters of all time right now. Are there any discussions about that, or are you not able to get into that? Logan McPherson: Yes, absolutely. We are not here to rewrite history in any way shape or form. But at the same time, we wanted to take this in new unexpected directions, so the idea was that, well, what if we created a new gem and energy source to be the MacGuffin of the series and let that drive its own story. So it was another layer we could add to the world, which already exists. I feel like there was a little more freedom to explore it because we were creating something new.
