The Godley Green Garden Village plan will now progress to the Secretary of State for a final say

Councillors have approved plans to build more than 2,000 homes in the Hyde green belt despite thousands of objections from campaigners who asked whether the land was ‘precious’ or a ‘cash cow’.

It wants to rip out existing trees and green areas and replace them with much smaller areas of green, which doesn’t make any sense at all.”

Jane Lawton, from the Werneth Low Environment Group described Godley Green as the ‘lungs’ of Tameside. She added: “We must implore you to act now. When a green space turns into a grey space this not only destroys human life expectancy, but it also destroys all the nature that lives there. Where will it go?”

Principal planning officer Steven Kirkham told members it was ‘not disputed’ that the development would ‘permanently transform the current landscape from a rural to an urban setting’, adding that ‘very substantial weight’ should be attached to the harm to the green belt.

“This development takes up less than two per cent of the green belt within Tameside. If this proposal does not go through we will not meet our housing targets. What this proposal does is protect the green belt across the rest of Tameside.”
