Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pleaded guilty to federal civil rights charges stemming from the May 2020 murder of George Floyd, reversing his earlier not-guilty plea after striking an agreement with prosecutors

The plea deal means the prosecution in the federal case will seek a 300-month maximum sentence instead of life imprisonment.in Mr. Floyd’s death and sentenced to 22.5 years in a state trial earlier this year, appeared in-person in Minnesota district court in St. Paul, Minn. Mr. Chauvin will serve the sentence concurrently with his state sentence.

Mr. Chauvin, 45 years old, waved to his family on his way into the courtroom, mouthing something to one of his family members. Mr. Chauvin, along with three other former Minneapolis police officers, was charged in May by the federal government in a three-count indictment, alleging that the four former officers willfully violated Mr. Floyd’s rights while acting in their official capacity as police officers.

Mr. Chauvin originally pleaded not guilty to the federal charges on Sept. 14, along with the three other former Minneapolis police officers. The three other former officers, Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane, who were also charged in Mr. Floyd’s death are expected to stand trial in state court for aiding and abetting second-degree murder and other charges in March.Crowds in cities across the U.S. from Minneapolis to Atlanta welcomed the guilty verdict for former police officer Derek Chauvin. He was convicted on all three counts in the death of George Floyd.
