NEW: Denver is not moving forward with plans to hire a private security company to take over the city’s migrant sheltering efforts, after backlash over the proposed $40 million contract.
In a written statement, the outgoing mayor’s office stated that it had hoped to finish negotiations, community engagement and get council approval prior to the new administration taking over, but there’s more work to be done.
Denver has spent nearly $20 million to provide services and shelter to more than 12,500 migrants since December, the mayor’s office said. “Denver will continue to work with our partners to welcome and meet the immediate needs of new arrivals for temporary shelter, food and connections to other resources as the city works to assess next steps around this response,” Melissa Burton, a policy analyst, wrote.
