The other American cities whose bids were unsuccessful were Cincinnati, Nashville, Orlando, Pasadena and, the big surprise, Washington, D.C./Baltimore. North of the border in Canada, Edmonton did not get to host. “We feel really strong about the bid we put forth,” Payne said. “I can’t sit here today and say that we left something out. I still think we’re a worthy, merited city to be in that tournament but we just didn’t get selected today. We’ve got a long history of hosting big-time soccer in this city and we’ll continue to do that.”
“We don’t think the promotion of it played a factor in ,” Payne said. “Our conversations with FIFA have been plenty. They’ve been one-on-one and there’s been quite a few of them. We think we delivered everything they were wanting. … We’re proud of it.”
