Perhaps the biggest difference between Kelly Brough and Mike Johnston remains their outlook on how to address homelessness — notably one of them supports using arrests as a last resort while the other does not.
Denver mayoral candidates Kelly Brough and Mike Johnston perhaps sought to build a bit of space between each other during their latest mayoral debate Tuesday night, but there’s still plenty of agreement between them.
Only once during the debate did the pair verge on actually debating each other. And even in that case Brough reminded Johnston that they had both supported the same piece of legislation. Brough suggested bringing in contractors to help with the “overwhelming” backlog of permit requests and she’d restructure the department to ensure that a single person was in charge of the entire process.
If Denver’s housing costs are rising, so too are the number of people living on the city’s streets. Brough said she’d stop sweeping homeless encampments and at the same time promised to end unsanctioned camping within her first year. She also stood behind a strategy to arrest people unwilling or unable to care for themselves, pledging to take them to service providers.
Brough had another suggestion for vacant office spaces: transition them into housing. That would bring more people to live, work and play in the downtown core, restoring the “vibrancy” of the area, she said.Johnston’s plan to reinvigorate downtown would be to address homelessness and make commuting to and from the area easier . He said he’d also hire 200 more responders, which would include police officers, mental health professionals and paramedics to make the area safer.
