According to the New York Times, “disinformation researchers” are worried that the ruling will make it harder for “civil society organizations” to police online speech.“That’s the really important distinction here,” University of California at Santa Barbara communications professor Miriam Metzger told the paper. “The government should be able to inform social media companies about things that they feel are harmful to the public.
“Platforms are very good at ignoring civil society organizations and our requests for help or requests for information or escalation of individual cases,” PEN America director for digital safety Viktorya Vilk told the paper. “They are less comfortable ignoring the government.” If the past actions of left-wing activists are any indication, any idea that does not fit with Democratic Party orthodoxy is sufficiently “harmful to the public” that it merits censorship.
