The current chair of the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus, Shackleford previously told IndyStar that the big issues in the 2023 mayoral election are education, economics, health and housing. As a mayoral candidate, she said she would focus on equity for racial minorities in the city.
She told those supporters her priorities if elected mayor will include addressing root causes of crime such as poverty, broadening economic growth, fixing the city’s $1 billion infrastructure gap, increasing affordable housing, decreasing the achievement gap in schools, and addressing chronic health crises such as drug overdoses and food deserts.
She also said she wants to fight for common-sense gun safety and improving relationships between residents and law enforcement. “Indianapolis needs a mayor that will both challenge and support business leaders,” she said. “I will be that mayor.”“We will not be able to achieve an adequate economy, supported by our workforce, if they do not have adequate homes. Housing in our city must improve.”that defined the use of chokeholds during arrests as deadly force and criminalized an officer for turning off body and vehicle cameras to conceal criminal behavior.
