And the first swing at Warren and Sanders tonight comes from John Delaney: “We can go down the road [they] want to take us, with bad policies like Medicare for All, free everything, and impossible promises…or we can nominate someone with new ideas.”
Yo everyone! I’m looking to see whether Bernie Sanders is upstaged again — or uses the debate to get a bounce in the polls and some much-needed good press. In the first debate last month, Sanders did a perfectly fine job, and the conversation actually centered on many of his progressive ideas. But Kamala Harris stole the show by doing what many of Sanders’ aides hoped he’d do, but didn’t — she attacked Joe Biden in a very memorable way.
Of course, I also have to bring up the possibility — however unlikely — of a Warren vs. Sanders clash: Sanders’ staffers have basically said it’s not happening unless he makes a mistake. So I’ll be looking to see whether he makes that mistake when CNN moderators inevitably try to goad him into attacking Warren.I’m interested to see if anyone goes after Pete Buttigieg tonight and if it’s over anything other than race relations.
And, are Sanders and Warren equally targeted by the others? Or, does the criticism of their progressive politics fall harder on one? We’ve already seen Hickenlooper take on both—Sanders over his adherence to democratic socialism and Warren for her growing and expensive list of priorities . How does tonight’s grouping in Detroit—all 10 of whom are white in a field that includes at least five candidates of color—confront issues of race after President Donald Trump’s attacks on Rep. Elijah Cummings, Baltimore and “The Squad?”11:39 p.m.
I’m watching to see if Marianne Williamson tries to interject more. She’s said she wants to be taken more seriously, but she also told Politico’s Instagram team today that she thinks she did just fine in Miami last month. From a policy standpoint, I’m watching Liz Warren closely on health care. She’s had a plan for seemingly everything else, but so far nothing specific on that key topic – seeming content instead to just to glom onto Sanders’ Medicare for All messaging.
