Rivals attack Buttigieg with urgency as New Hampshire vote nears
“No one has ever won the nomination without being able to get overwhelming support from the African American community,” Biden said. “And, so far, no one’s been doing that but me.” The former vice president continues to poll strongly in more diverse states that vote after New Hampshire.
“I don’t understand how those things don’t matter,” Biden said. “What has he done? Who has he pulled together?” The councilman Biden was referring to, Buttigieg said on NBC’s Meet the Press, was a longtime political rival. He argued that other black leaders in South Bend supported him and pointed to economic initiatives he championed in his city that helped African Americans.
He dialed it back some, though, when he appeared before voters in Hampton, at a freewheeling town hall where Biden took questions from the audience — a departure from his usual practice of giving a speech and then hitting the rope line. But he argued that success in that one state did not predict which candidate would win in important swing states like Pennsylvania and Michigan.Biden’s less-confrontational tone in Hampton may have helped sway Amber Byron, a 41-year-old teacher from Manchester, who is still trying to decide whom to support. Afterward, she said she was more impressed with Biden. “There is a sense of empathy and unifying that I found refreshing.
“People are suffering,” she said. “You don’t feel it as a student in a privileged institution like this ... but it still affects so many people.”
