Heard on the Street: Eaters’ loyalty may shift away from restaurants to their favorite food apps

Much like publishers embraced and later dreaded Amazon.com, the popularity of food-delivery apps may mean restaurants could be the next businesses to get starved. Online ordering platforms comprise roughly half of the $17 billion online takeout and delivery business in the U.S. and are expected to triple in size by 2022, according to Canaccord Genuity. And while they say their goal is to better serve both restaurants and their diners, many of their business models disrupt the relationship between the two.
