A Naperville Sun newspaper clipping of a couple sitting on a Naperville Riverwalk park bench from nearly 20 years ago inspired a former resident to recreate the scene with his wife.

Dave Renkes inherited a scrapbook that contained a clipping of his parents, Ted and Char Renkes, on the Main Street bench between Jackson and Chicago avenues. They’re seated next to the endearing “A Lifetime Together” sculpture of childhood sweethearts Jane Latshaw and William “Billy” Scherer, who met in third grade, married in 1941 and spent the next 60 years as husband and wife.

His parents were charter members of Knox Presbyterian Church and helped with its groundbreaking, he said. He and his brother attended Elmwood Elementary School and Lincoln Junior High School before the family moved to Pennsylvania and then to Georgia.
