Deaths among new mothers in Texas spiked at least 40% over the last two decades across all racial and ethnic groups, according to a new study on U.S. maternal...
The statistic measures the number of women who die from birth and pregnancy-related causes and up to a year after delivery, ranging from bleeding to suicide. Up to a third of maternal deaths happen in the weeks and months after birth, a time when women who may be showing warning signs of complications slip through the cracks as insurance coverage wanes.
“In a poor health care system, you would expect maternal mortality rates to be high. We have a poor health care system in the U.S.,” Raines-Milenkav said. “It’s not just access to care when you’re pregnant. That’s great, but women need care before they become pregnant.” The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation study did not address why maternal mortality rates increased so significantly over the last 20 years. A number of factors are likely to have contributed to the rise, including systemic racism, poorer overall health and better maternal mortality data reporting.
Researchers are waiting on state-by-state data for years after 2020, but Raines-Milenkov said COVID-19′s effects will almost certainly show up in maternal mortality reporting. Systems put in place to protect mothers and staff from the virus, like not allowing women to have a support person during labor, turned out to be detrimental to the health of the mother.“You need an advocate,” Raines-Milenkov said.
