Instead of awarding draft picks, the conferences could bargain that a school that loses a player who becomes a superstar elsewhere would receive cold, hard cash from the school that took the player. If there’s a salary cap — which there likely would be — perhaps schools that lose more players than they gain would get some salary cap relief that would allow them to offer more to certain players.
