Deandre Ayton's stellar performance in the Suns' home win over Sacramento on Tuesday continues his evolution as one of the league's top centers.
Ayton was assertive and lights out from the onset. He looked unstoppable after being fed the ball in high and low posts, shooting fadeaways along the baseline, midrange and the high posts, jumphooks in the paint, and rolling well off screens for dunks. Ayton told the media after the game he studied how to battle against Sabonis, who will be playing in his third All-Star Game this weekend.
Ayton added about Sabonis, “He is an All-Star, man. You saw me walking in pre-game. I was watching film on him," Ayton said."First thing I said is, ‘That’s an All-Star, man; I got to lock in.’ Ayton and the Suns have come a long way together since he entered the league playing for a terrible Suns team that ended the 2018-19 season with 19 wins, their third-worst in franchise history. The Suns roster was thin at point guard and had an inexperienced first-year head coach in Igor Kokosov, who was fired after that season.
"And having a player like Book to his capacity will probably see two or three guys a night. Finishing my rolls as easy dunks and just paint touches all night. It’s very appreciative having that chemistry. But Mont really instilled in us sharing the ball.”
