A dead one-year-old gray whale washed ashore at Seacliff State Beach this week. APTOS — A dead 1-year-old gray whale washed ashore at Seacliff State Beach this week and local experts are fighting the tumbling tide to try to better understand what may have happened to the sea creature.
“What’s most unusual about this animal is nearly all of the calves and young gray whales that are stranded are almost always in our area killed by orca whales and this animal was not,” said Dunkin. Telltale signs of an orca attack include bite marks, also known as “rake marks,” on the whale’s body as well as the absence of a tongue, which the orca typically eats. “This animal still has its tongue and did not show any signs of rake marks on the body.
“The tide is not cooperating very well and so the animal keeps washing off of the beach and ends up floating and bouncing down the coast,” said Dunkin. “As it’s doing that, it’s getting more decomposed and so the types of samples we can get from it are fewer.”
