DC Studios has begun the arduous task of mapping out its future slate, with James Gunn confirming he and Peter Safran are working out a plan that could last 8-10 years.
Newly appointed DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirms that they have begun mapping out a new 10-year plan for the future of the DC Universe. Previously referred to as the DC Extended Universe , the original plans for a DC cinematic universe to rival Marvel’s own began with 2013’s Man of Steel and was followed by the much-maligned Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016. Characterized by a series of critical misfires, behind-the-scenes dramas and changing faces, Warner Bros.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY With Gunn and Safran’s new roles only coming into effect as of the start of the month, The Suicide Squad director has revealed the pair have hit the ground running. As part of a Warner Bros. Discovery virtual town hall , Gunn has spoken about the co-CEOs' plans “to make DC as great as it can be and as it should be”. It turns out those plans are already underway.
The opportunity to make DC as great as it can be and as it should be — that is the reason why I’m doing this job because I know that Peter and I can do that. We spent the past couple days with a group of some of the best thinkers in the industry, the best writers in the industry starting to map out that eight to 10 year plan of what it’s going to look like in theater, in TV, in animation, across the board for these characters.
Taking a cue from MCU boss Kevin Feige’s book, Gunn and Safran seem set to provide the rebranded DCU with a strong framework that will guide the studio’s efforts for the next decade. What most fans will be eager to find out, however, is when these plans will finally be made public. If the way Marvel Studios operate is any indication, fans could possibly expect the co-CEOs' big reveal to take place at a major event like next year’s San Diego Comic-Con.
Where Will The DCU's New Story Begin? At present, the DCU still has a number of upcoming film releases that were already in various stages of production prior to the recent studio shakeup and rebranding. With Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom all planned for a 2023 release, it is likely that Gunn and Safran’s own plans will not begin to influence the overall direction of the franchise until 2024 and beyond.
