Before the average person in the United States knew the extent of the threat we were facing, we heard the horror stories from China, Italy, and South Korea. We were only a few weeks behind, but the novel coronavirus was coming. As spring blossomed in the U.S., each day brought fresh news of government inaction, testing delays, curves, and spikes in infection. It became clear that our lives would change indefinitely — if not for good.
The impacts on day-to-day life have already been profound. State governments have imposed stay-at-home orders. Public gatherings have been banned, restaurants and stores shuttered, nonessential workers ordered to stay home, and schools are closed for the foreseeable future. Proms and graduations are off, jobs and summer internships canceled, and high school and college seniors have little sense of what comes next.
This generation — our readers — will never forget how this global pandemic reshaped shaped their lives. The long-term impacts on financial futures, academic lives, social lives, and cultures are just beginning to reveal themselves. Atwe thought this year would be devoted to covering the 2020 election cycle; instead, we’re focused on what recovery and our lives will look like moving forward.
