Letterman’s Netflix interviews are safer, more sterile. Once known for his confrontational interview style, Letterman’s new technique consists of throwing his guests a series of softballs coated in compliments, cultivating the safest of spaces for his guests, Dave Rubin-style. It was disappointing to hear West echo the same kind of ill-tempered opinions that can be found in any toxic comment section, the imagined victimhood of the angry internet commentator. A vague claim that #MeToo is a dangerous movement for men, touting the “court of public opinion” defense, and claiming that Trump supporters are being systematically oppressed.
While West compared his trolling of the media to the unpredictable antics of Andy Kaufman, it seemed to be more of a coping strategy than a marketing technique . Playing a character appears to deaden the many blows of the media, the criticisms directed at a semi-fictional version of West.
