We chat with AquaTeenHungerForce co-creators DaveWillis2 & Matt Maiellaro about getting the band back together for AquaTeenForeverPlantasm and what sets their genius wheat apart from the comedy chaff:
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment presents the comeback of a lifetime in Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm, the newest film based on Adult Swim's iconic Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Created by Matt Maiellaro and Dave Willis, the original show ran for 11 seasons, and also produced a previous movie: Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters. The original characters and cast members return for Plantasm, but plenty has changed since they were last a true blue team.
I know we've had Aquadonk Side Pieces recently, but people have been craving more Aqua Teen for awhile now. How long has Plantasm been in development and how many iterations did it go through to reach its current state?Matt Maiellaro: It was pure gold. I think we were living in blissful ignorance of the rabble demanding more Aqua Teen. Then we get a call during COVID, and they were like, "How'd you like to make a movie?" We did the whole thing remotely, which was crazy.
Another awesome voice is Natasha Rothwell's. Aside from bringing the original talent back, how do you bring on these incredible newcomers? How excited are people to join Aqua Teen? The next one's got a lot of Catholicism to it. We go into heaven, and we hang out with Jesus. Big G, as we call him. We find the Aqua Teens there, and everybody who's been killed in the show. And the Pope is the hero of this movie, and he has to battle Satan, who wants the show set in Hell.
No, he did an audition for us on voicemail, and he was drunk. We were like, "This is perfect." We got him to do it again, but he was sober, and the audition wasn't as good. He had to get drunk and do it again. That's a true story. Dave Willis: Not everyone does! Dana's some sort of vaudeville, Phil Silvers born again, unique individual. We're very fortunate to just stumble into him; it's crazy.
