Acclaimed jazz guitarist Dan Wilson teams with San Jose musicians — organist Brian Ho and drummer Sylvia Cuenca — for Bay Area gigs April 5-8.
Rarely glimpsed in public, the musicians’ grapevine is a wonder of efficiency, delivering timely information that can profoundly shape an artist’s life and career.
Intorre dropped Wilson’s name. DeFrancesco, who died last August at age 51, dutifully checked the guitarist out on YouTube and picked up the phone. “When I got the first call I was deer hunting, just getting ready to go into the woods,” said Wilson, who lives in Akron, Ohio. “I see a number from Phoenix and thought it was a bill collector. I almost didn’t pick up. Joey said, ‘I’ve been checking you out, you can play the blues.
Taking Wilson under his wing, McBride produced and released Wilson’s 2021 album “Vessels of Wood and Earth” on his newly formed Mack Avenue imprint Brother Mister, and co-produced the follow-up “Things Eternal,” which is due out in May . You could say that the guitarist’s run of gigs around the region next month is a direct result of Intorre’s suggestion.
In connecting with Wilson about six years ago at Yoshi’s, Ho similarly benefitted from the grapevine. Ever since the guitarist started touring with DeFrancesco, he’d been talking up Ho, “saying he can really play,” Wilson recalled.
