The UN has warned that the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam in Ukraine yesterday will have “grave and far-reaching consequences for thousands of people”, while politicians have wanred of an “environmental catastrophe” AlannahFrancis1 reports
Ukraine’s prosecutor general, Andriy Kostin, said that more than 40,000 people were in danger of being flooded. He added that more than 17,000 were being evacuated, with 25,000 more people in Russian-controlled areas needing to be moved to safety.
President Zelensky described the bursting of the Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine as “an environmental bomb of mass destruction” and said only liberating the entire country could guarantee againstMr Zelensky called an emergency meeting of the country’s security and defence council in response to the major incident.
He also said on Tuesday he received “a serious, powerful” offer from leaders of countries ready to provide Kyiv with F-16 fighter jets and is awaiting final agreements with key allies.“Our partners know how many aircraft we need,” Mr Zelensky was quoted as saying in a statement on his website. “I have already received an understanding of the number from some of our European partners … It is a serious, powerful offer.
The Kremlin has accused Ukraine of being behind the dam’s destruction. Russia said its opponent was trying to distract from the launch of a major counteroffensive Moscow says is faltering.Additional reporting by Reuters
