Solorzano said county officials were encouraged that more people voted early than expected, but were not surprised by the total voter participation tally. Johnson had around 43,000 votes in Dallas County alone. Dallas residents in Collin and Denton counties also participated in the race. At nearly 1,700 votes, his district had the second-fewest cast in a contested Dallas City Council race, according to the county’s unofficial election tally Sunday. He said one reason voters may not have turned out in large numbers is that they were attending other events, such as Cinco de Mayo celebrations.
But Clayton P. Henry, a Dallas political consultant, said he believes City Council elections should stay separate from presidential ballots. Moving the elections to the same ticket would increase partisanship in the city’s nonpartisan races, Henry said. “What brought people out in this election, certainly in District 13 and District 10, was homelessness and the short-term rental issue,” he said. “Those were the things that motivated part of that turnout so it can be issue-oriented, but unless people have that fire in their belly of a certain issue, they tend not to vote.”In South Oak Cliff, Reginald Terry, 55, said he voted because he believes local leaders impact his community more than federal officials.
