Dallas botched coyote control in Lake Highlands | Opinion
A coyote was shot and killed by wildlife officials late Wednesday, a day after a 2-year-old boy was attacked by one in Lake Highlands.Lake Highlands residents are living in a suburban horror novel. One mother screamed when she saw a coyote dragging her 2-year-old son across the yard. Later, another neighbor walking her dog encountered a coyote moving aggressively toward her. Yet another neighbor found his dog dead in the yard after a coyote jumped over the fence.have been killed.
Dallas Animal Services disputes that, but it is undeniable that it failed the White Rock Valley neighborhood in its communications about the coyote problem. Officials on Thursday announced that they would launch a hotline to report aggressive coyotes and added that this would be part of a long-term coyote management plan.
That’s an appropriate response on paper, but we urge Dallas City Council members to hold Dallas Animal Services accountable for following through. The city will have to do far more than roll out a hotline and pass out some flyers to earn back the trust of residents in Lake Highlands. For one, Dallas Animal Services stumbled with its statement about the attack against the boy. The department wrote on Facebook that the coyote was well known in the neighborhood and that residents were routinely hand-feeding it and petting it.
“This behavior eroded the coyote’s natural fear of humans and gave it the confidence to carry out this attack,” the statement read.
