“This transaction ... should never have been proposed in the first place,” said Holly Vedova, the agency’s bureau of competition director, . “This should be a lesson learned to hospital systems all over the country and their counsel: the FTC will not hesitate to take action in enforcing the antitrust laws to protect healthcare consumers who are faced with unlawful hospital consolidation.”In early June, the FTC sued to prevent the sale on the grounds it would lead to “higher prices, less innovation, and lower quality care for patients” in the Salt Lake City region where about 80% of Utah residents live.
