Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity has received a $9 million donation, the largest gift in its 36-year history, from novelist and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott...
The $9 million donation will go toward buying and developing land in areas where the nonprofit group builds properties, such as Joppa and West Dallas. New areas may also be scouted by the organization over several years. The nonprofit group also hopes to invest in financial-literacy programs for its clients, according to a news release.
In addition to the Dallas Habitat, Habitat for Humanity International and 83 U.S. Habitat affiliate organizations received a total of $436 million from Scott. “Habitat works to break down barriers and bring people together — to tear down obstacles and build a world where everyone, no matter who we are or where we come from, has a decent place to live,” Habitat for Humanity International CEO Jonathan Reckford said in a written statement. “This incredible gift helps make that work possible.”Families are eligible to buy a home once they have completed the organization’s 300-hour financial-education course and become “mortgage-ready.
Dallas Habitat has 13 homes under construction and three that will start this weekend. Eleven more homes will begin construction in April and May..
