THE ALTERNATIVE FOR SOLAR: Between the Inflation Reduction Act, tariffs on imports, and President Joe Biden’s made-in-America industrial policy, Washington is trying to help U.S. solar manufacturers beat the Chinese at their own game.
Some 97% of the world’s production of silicon wafers occurs in China, while 75% of silicon-based solar cells put into modules installed in the United States are made by Chinese subsidiaries in Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand — subjects of the Commerce Department’s storied anticircumvention inquiry . “Polysilicon semiconductors for solar are pretty much made very similarly [to chips], and that means they require two things and massive abundance: One is labor, and the other is energy — and two things that if you’re going head to head with China, you will lose on,” he told Jeremy.
