Jon Nichol has made it his mission to help those who have lost loved ones after struggling following the death of his own son, Luke, at the age of just 20
The ‘devastated’ dad of a Lancashire man who took his own life has launched a community post box to help families grieve lost loved ones.His heartbroken dad, Jon Nichol, has now launched the post box at Carleton Crematorium, near Blackpool, in a bid to prevent other families being ‘consumed’ by grief.Jon, a self-employed builder at J.G. Builders, said: “Luke’s loss is devastating to me, as a parent. I didn’t really want to be here; I was just existing. It’s just heart-breaking.
Luke lived with his partner and six-month old son, Carter, and was an avid fisherman. Following Luke’s death, Jon struggled mentally processing the situation. The builder then came across a nine-year-old girl who had created a ‘Letters to Heaven’ post box in Nottinghamshire, after the death of a grandparent. The post box allows grieving families to ‘communicate’ with loved ones who have died, through letters and cards.
Jon said: “A loss is a loss, no matter who or what it is. I know what it’s like when you can’t speak to them. To get it out of your body is a bit like a pressure release valve. I didn’t do a GoFundMe because it was something I wanted to pull together. The idea of the post box resonated with me so much and I know it would help me and if it helps just one other person it’s worth its weight in gold.
