Washington, D.C.’s attorney general has sued the NFL, Dan Snyder and Roger Goodell, alleging they colluded to cover up the problems and toxic workplace inside the Washington Commanders
of the team—a stunning reversal after he had long said he wouldn’t sell, no matter how many problems piled up inside his club. That move came not long after the Indianapolis Colts’
“They told the public that they were coming in to conduct an independent investigation,” Racine said. “For years the team and its owner have caused very real and very serious harm—and then lied about it…They did all of this to hide the truth, protect their images, and let the profits continue to roll.”
The NFL was widely assailed for not issuing a written report with the findings, as it had previously done in several previous high-profile investigations. Critics, including the lawyers representing former employees, accused the league of covering up the results to protect one of its billionaire owners.
“For far too long, the NFL has actively concealed wrongdoing by the Washington Commanders and has shielded Mr. Snyder from accountability at every turn,” lawyers Lisa Banks and Debra Katz said in a statement. “The NFL must understand that sexual harassment and abuse cannot be tolerated or concealed.”
Racine, a Democrat who will leave office at the end of the year after opting not to run for re-election, said he was “quite confident” that the case would go forward under his successor, Democrat Brian Schwalb.
