The initiative is being referred to as “Livable Cuyahoga, a community for all ages,” and aims to take action to help individual communities improve various community services to better serve it’s older and younger residents alike.
Cuyahoga Country joins AARP network of age friendly communitiesCLEVELAND, Ohio — Community leaders in Cuyahoga County gathered at the Fatima Family Center in Cleveland’s Hough neighborhood Thursday afternoon in support of a movement to make communities in the county more age friendly.
“A community with sidewalks that are safe and walkable for a mom with toddlers in a stroller is also safe and walkable for a couple in their 70s using a walker,” said Senior and Adult Services Administrator Natasha Pietrocola, stressing that the initiative, while driven by the needs of older adults, is intended to benefit the entire community.
As part of the five-year program, the county will work with community partners in an effort to develop and improve community life in eight key domains, including housing, transportation, health services, social inclusion, employment and civic participation, social participation, outdoor spaces and communication.
“It’s really a pitch to them that the country cannot do this alone; cities cannot do this alone. Everybody has a skill set, a talent, and we have to work together to pool resources,” said Pietrocola.
