“When we’re bringing in jurors, we don’t know whether they are vaccinated or not. In a trial, if you lose one, two or three jurors, you must hit the reset button.” Judge Pamela Barker postponed a trial set to begin Monday in U.S. District Court in Cleveland after defense attorney Carolyn Kucharski cited the “surge in COVID-19 numbers in the State of Ohio and Cuyahoga County.”
The court, however, has canceled on-site naturalization ceremonies through January. The ceremonies draw scores of families and friends. On Monday, the state reported 18,942 new cases. Since the pandemic began, more than 236,000 Cuyahoga County residents have tested positive and 2,828 have died, according to the state health department.
Sheehan said some judges viewed the issue as an individual one. He said judges have been encouraged to use virtual hearings as often as possible.
