New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo orders schools to remain closed through June
Prior to Cuomo’s announcement, the State Education Department, which operates independently of the governor’s office, had directed districts toStill some held out hope: A quick return to classrooms would symbolize the virus had been contained — a rosy notion that’s evaporated as the statewide death toll approaches 19,000 out of more than 308,000 cases.
“We are continuously inspired by the work of educators, staff and parents across the state to provide instruction throughout the pandemic," the leaders said. "We know it hasn’t always been easy, but we must continue to forge ahead for the benefit of our students." Cuomo said the statewide approach to schools is due to the short timeline before the end of the school year, combined with the complexities of crafting social distancing plans for school facilities.
With a spring return no longer on the table, the focus quickly moves to how schools will operate this summer and fall. City schools Chancellor Richard Carranza has said a September reopening“We’re going to err on the side of caution now,” Cuomo said. “Summer school — you would need to see, in my opinion, a drop or a stabilization in the infection rate for a period of time, because kids are going to be kids.
