USA TODAYA woman who alleged Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo sexually assaulted her in a Las Vegas hotel room in June 2009 is seeking $200 million in a lawsuit filed in federal court, the new venue for claims originally made last year in a Nevada court.
“The state case was dismissed by us because we filed the identical claims in federal court due to federal court’s rules on serving foreigners,” Larissa Drohobyczer, one of Mayorga’s attorneys, told USA TODAY Sports. “We basically just switched venues, but the claims remain.” Mayorga alleges she was sodomized by Ronaldo in a room at the Palms Hotel and Casino on June 13, 2009. She claims she suffered post-traumatic stress disorder and depression along with physical injuries as a result of the alleged incident.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department re-opened the investigation of the incident in October. A spokesperson for the department told USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday that it “remains an active criminal investigation.”Mayorga agreed to a $375,000 settlement that included a non-disclosure agreement, a deal the lawsuit alleges was set up by a team of “fixers” hired by Ronaldo
