Creed is following up on an unresolved Rocky story
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Creed movies are copying an unresolved character arc from the original Rocky series, but the storyline might actually work this time around. Creed and its sequels star Michael B. Jordan as Adonis “Donnie” Creed, the estranged son of Rocky Balboa’s rival-turned-mentor Apollo Creed, who desperately wants to live up to his father’s legacy. Rocky trained him to take on the mantle and turned him into a world champion.
There are many similarities between Rocky’s story and Donnie’s story. They’re both underdogs who took on champions to prove themselves to the world. They both met the love of their life during their training, and what started off as a boxing story ended up as a love story. Both Rocky and Donnie are fathers trying to balance their responsibilities as a fighter with their responsibilities as a parent.
In Rocky V, Rocky’s own son – Rocky, Jr., also known as Robert – was set up to follow in his father’s footsteps and inherit the franchise. The potential of Amara taking up Donnie’s mantle is repeating this storyline. Amara even gets into trouble for fighting, just like Rocky, Jr. after he trained with Paulie. At the end of Rocky V, Rocky gave his son the special cufflinks implying something being passed down.
How Creed Can Make The Parent-Child Legacy Idea Work This Time The Creed movies have already proven that its legacy sequel plan was better than one where Rocky passed his talent to his son. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that the Creed series should avoid doing the same idea with Donnie passing his talent to his daughter.
