As cold temperatures take over the country, coronavirus infections are expected to rise
People are being warned to look out for three key Covid symptoms as the UK Health Security Agency says the number of cases is set to rise during the colder months. Other respiratory winter viruses like the flu will also become more common as winter approaches, with attempts being made to accelerate the coronavirus and flu vaccination programmes.
After an initial spike in September, the number of coronavirus cases in England and Wales is currently falling. However, the Public Health Agency in Northern Ireland has warned in its most recent Covid-19 bulletin that during the week ending October 1, there was a slight increase in the number of new Covid infections detected through clinical and routine testing - from 441 in the previous week to 448.
As of October 8, NHS England reported 4,414 patients in hospital with Covid. This is a 14 per cent increase from the previous week and the highest total since May 4.
