Covid numbers hit two-year low, but scientists warn there's no room for complacency 🔴 TomBawden ✍️:
But there is absolutely no room for complacency with cases expected to begin rising at some point in the next few weeks to months, scientists predict.
“It’s so easy to be lulled into a false sense of security when it comes to Covid. The warm weather inevitably results in less infection – more outside activity, improved ventilation and the virus doesn’t spread as easily in the heat,” Professor Lawrence Young, of Warwick University, told“But the virus is still out there and the more infectious 1.16 variant [Arcturus] continues to account for an increasing proportion of infections in the UK.
Professor Steve Griffin, of Leeds University, added: “Many people have been led to believe that SARS-COV-2 has now become an otherwise ‘normal’, endemic, seasonal virus that has lost its teeth. However, none of the above are true.” “I can see no reason why we won’t follow the pattern seen last year with multiple waves of the virus, driven largely by its ability to evolve away from neutralising antibody responses. It continues to present a considerable health risk, including the insidious, seemingly overlooked epidemic of long Covid,” he added.
