Key points from the latest evidence revealed at the Covid inquiry

Jeremy Hunt under pressure to deliver growth after Bank of England predicts year of stagnationFormer head of NHS England, Simon Stevens, revealed in his witness statement that Matt Hancock, pictured, wanted to take the decision about who should be treated for the virus.

“The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care took the position that in this situation he – rather than, say, the medical profession or the public – should ultimately decide who should live and who should die. Fortunately this horrible dilemma never crystalised,” he said. “ not go down well, I’m afraid. It may well have been my presentation or the way I did that interview, but I felt it was the truth,” she said.

Civil servants in the Department for Health and Social care advised her “it was probably best if I just kept a distance for a while until things settle down, which I did,” she said.“I did feel I had let him down in some way,” she said. “But I still felt I had spoken the truth.”She added: “I really felt the public and population should not suffer in any way because of this and, therefore, we found ways to continue the work.

He also said he was concerned that, in April 2020, No10 special advisors – who are political appointments – were attending SAGE meetings discussing lockdowns. The health department and No10 met for a regular meeting to discuss progress and DHSC had asked for Covid to be added to meeting agenda because it was not originally on the PM’s list of topics, he said.
