Price hike plans were shelved
Changes to planned controversial car parking charges could leave a council £282,000 down on what it had hoped to raise with them. West Northamptonshire Council said it had hoped to collect £937,000 more with the new charges from April - but has slashed them after an outcry from businesses and residents.
Mark Mullen, from Northampton’s Business Improvement District said the group, which has 600 members, remains in "direct opposition to the proposals". Mr Mullen told a WNC cabinet meeting on Monday the BID could not see a "moral justification" for the new charges.An all day charge for Northampton’s car parks inside the town’s inner ring road would cost £8.80 on weekdays. For those outside the inner ring road, an all day charge would cost £6.60.
Phil Larratt, WNC’s cabinet member for environment, transport, highways and waste, said the authority had received 3,000 comments on its planned budget and a “significant number” of those had been about car parking charges.
