Natural gas leaked from a defective fitting at the Pennsylvania chocolate factory where a powerful explosion leveled one building, heavily damaged another and killed seven people, federal safety investigators said on Tuesday, July 18, as they sought to pinpoint a cause.
The explosion is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board. A July 18 update by the agency stated the explosion was caused by a leak from a defective fitting at the Pennsylvania chocolate factory, The blast destroyed building No. 2, located at 55 2nd Avenue, and caused damage to the neighboring Palmer building No. 1, located at 77 S 2nd Avenue. It addition to killing the seven workers, it injured several others., the Pennsylvania chocolate factory was fined more than $44,000 by the federal workplace safety agency on Thursday for failing to evacuate the building after employees reported smelling gas and failing to keep their workers safe, prior to the explosion.
