Evan Lowenstein was convinced that the only thing likely to save his upstart concert streaming business, Stageit, was global warming. Turns out, it could be the coronavirus by zogblog
Better known as one half of Evan and Jaron—the identical twin duo responsible for Millennial middle school dance standard “Crazy For This Girl”—Lowenstein launched Stageit in the late aughts, but it never really took off.
In addition, the site sends artists an automated recap of each gig with audience contact information to help identify superfans and allows low-pressure monetization through a virtual gratuity jar. Although many acts busk online for Venmo tips, Stageit removes a step. $3.5 million into the company. They were betting that advances in video technology and internet bandwidth would lead to a concert livestreaming boom.Even though Lowenstein managed to attract performances from big acts, none returned for an encore, mainly because it wasn’t worth the effort. Although some artists have grossed as much as $100,000 for a single show on the site, superstars can clock ten times that for a typical arena show.
“The opportunity for connection right now in this self-isolated time is bringing out these themes, these trends and these emerging behaviors,” says Jen Prince, global leader of Twitter’s media and entertainment business. “One is just even resetting expectations for how [consumers] get content access.”
