A gift to family should come with no strings attached.
Once there were three sisters. Their growing years were full of good memories – and not so good .
Their parents also loved the memories of family, and they took care that the trust naming the daughters as beneficiaries was “fair and equal.” As part of this, they had a beautiful second home in an idyllic setting that reminded them and their daughters of sweet growing-up years. Part of their agreement was that if any of the sisters should want to sell, the other sisters would have first right of refusal. And after all, why would they want to rid themselves of such a beautiful asset? It was in the woods by a river, and an idyllic situation for grandkids arriving. The old tractor was still working, and the red wagon to hitch to this, taking small children for lovely rides around the property.
“Well, I don’t have the money to buy you out,” said the second one. “I have to save for retirement! We can’t really use it with our families, anyway, because there aren’t enough bedrooms and accommodations for all. I’d like to turn it into a money-making venture to at least cover the costs of upkeep.”
