Researchers at Consumer Reports found 16 of the 48 chocolates - or a third - had high levels of lead or cadmium. Every single one contained some of the metals.

Consumer Reports said 16 of 48 products contained high heavy metal levels. Chocolate products were tested for cadmium and lead. READ MORE: These areMany of America's favorite chocolates contain 'concerning levels' of heavy metals linked to cancer and developmental delays, a report reveals.

Chocolate companies said their products were still 'safe to eat' because someone would need to consume very large amounts of the metals for them to pose a significant health risk. Advertisement This is no more than 0.5 micrograms of lead per day and no more than 4.1mcg of cadmium. Results showed four out of the six hot chocolates — or 66 percent — contained high levels of lead.

Researchers also analyzed servings from 12 chocolate chips, finding two — from Target and luxury brand Hu — contained high levels of lead. Dr Eric Boring, a chemist involved in the research, said: 'In general, products with higher cocoa content tend to have higher levels of metals, but not always. 'Our tests have found that other brands have succeeded in producing chocolate products with lower levels of heavy metals that are safer for consumers.

It follows a separate petition to the company in May which reached 75,000 signatures and was also urging them to reduce the amount of toxic metals in their chocolates. Lead is well-known to be dangerous to humans, causing memory loss, abdominal pain and low mood in adults after long-term exposure.
